DSP&P Waycars: Hiatory, Photos, Plans

DSP&P waycars, or cabooses, were 4-wheel "bobbers" with a curved roof profile, no cupola, and two windows on each side. They could sleep two people but were mainly used for the conductor's office work. They were painted white with black lettering or oxide red with white lettering, apparently at random. Both colours can be seen on some trains. They varied in many details as they were built in small batches across a 5 year period. Length over the body varied between 12 and 13 feet with overall length over end platforms of 18 to 19 feet. Outside width was about 7'-9" with the platforms about 29" above the rails, and the roof about 7'-4" above that.

Below is my simplified roster of DSP&P waycars, based on Robert Grandt's Roster Lists from Narrow Gauge Pictorial Volume VIII. Since many of C&S cabooses are well documented, you can use some dimensions and details to work backward to specific DSP&P waycars. Build dates are approximations and various sources disagree with each other.

HISTORY
Dates in the above table vary according to source. There is also doubt about which two waycars went missing before 1885 - probably 2 of numbers 61, 62, 63, or 64.

Colorado Central also contributed waycars to the C&S, CC #1725 and 1726 became UPD&G #61 and 62 in 1897. #63 was built and the three became C&S #300, 301, and 302 in 1899-1900. The first two survived to 1912 and became C&S #1000 and 1001.
