Equipment Rosters

The first order for rolling stock on the DSP&P went out in 1874 for 30 flat cars, 5 box cars, 5 coal cars, a coach, a combine, and 6 excursion cars. This initial batch of cars plus 2 small locomotives were sufficient for construction and revenue service for the next four years. Further construction brought the flat car count up to around 100, and these were also probably used as coal cars or ballast cars when needed. Subsequent orders over the next 10 years brought the total fleet of freight cars up to about 1300. The passener car fleet reached about 40 cars of various kinds -- many survived until the C&S era.

During the 1878 - 1885 period, the locomotive roster rose to 74, after which the number decined slowly due to re-assignment and old age. All but one of the Mason Bogies were gone before the C&S era, but most of the others survived well past 1899, through a number of rebuilds to modernize the motive power.

Below is my simplified roster that can be used to put appropriate car numbers on commercial, kit-bashed,  or scratchbuilt models, as well as to see the evolution of the rolling stock up to the C&S takeover.

All the other rosters publised over the years are given below for further reference.

James Ehernberger's DSP&P Roster
Extracts from James Ehernberger's "Union Pacific Equipment List - 1885" are shwn below. These tables are from original Union Pacific documents and reflect the state of he DSP&P eauipment in 1885. The lists include highly detailed specifications of locomotives and passenger cars, along with the pre- and post-1885 rolling stock numbers. This number cross reference will help in modeling older equipment from plans and folios of a more modern era.

Ron Rudnick's DSP&P Rolling Stock ROSTERS
Extracts of rolling stock rosters from varios years contained in Ron Rudnick's "DSP&P Modeling Guide" are shown below. Ron's exhaustive research, sharp deductive skills, and immaculate draftsmanship combine to make his Modeling Guide a "must have" item for any DSP&P fan or modeler.

The first order for rolling stock on the DSP&P went out in 1874 for 30 flat cars, 5 box cars, 5 coal cars, a coach, a combine, and 6 excursion cars. Darrell Poole's DSP&P Refrigerator Car Roster
This table was extracts
from Darrell Poole's Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette article. The list takes us into the C&S era, which is a big help in cross-referencing C&S plans and folios back to their DSP&P roots. It also untangles duplicate car numbers applied to new equipment purchased by C&S long after the original cars had disappeared.

Robert Sloan's DSP&P Freight Car Roster List
This page contains a rolling stock rosterfrom  Robert Sloan's "Narrow Gauge Data Book". Thjs list take us into the C&S era, which is a big help in cross-referencing C&S plans and folios back to their DSP&P roots.

Note DSP&P Boxcars should include 512-554, 560-799, and 800-1180 should read 800-1049, 1080-1099

Robert Grandt's DSP&P RosterS
This page contains etracts from Robert Grandt's coverage of locomotives, waycars, and MOW cars
from "Narrow Gauge Pictorial" Volumes VI and VIII. These lists all take us into the C&S era, which is a big help in cross-referencing C&S plans and folios back to their DSP&P roots. Robert's coverage of the DSP&P waycars is especially valuable in sorting out the many renumberings, as well as the timing of appearances and disappearances over their long liftime.

Utah-Rails DSP&P Locomotive Roster
This page is extracted from
Utah Rails' DSP&P Locomotive Roster. There are minor differences between this roster and the Eherkberger and Grandt rosters, in particular as to whether DSP&P #24 and # 33 entered the C&S roster in 1899.

Notes: Cyls = Cylinder Diameter x Stroke in inches, eg "14x18"
Drv = Drive Wheel Diameter in inches, eg "38"
