DSP&P Cooke 2-8-0 Consolidation
Locomotives
The Danforth &
Cooke Locomotive Works,
located in Paterson NJ,
began operations in 1852. In spite of the 20-year head start
that Rogers had, Danforth & Cooke grew very quickly. Orders for
its locomotives were on the rise through the Civil War and into
the 1880s. The Danforth & Cooke plant continued to operate even
after it was merged into the American Locomotive Company in
1901, along with Rogers and 6 others , Under the control of Alco, it mainly built rotary snow
plows or specialty engines for foreign companies. Danforth &
Cooke's Paterson plant turned out its last locomotive in 1926
-- more than 3000 steam
locomotives in all.
This page covers the 20 DSP&P 2-8-0 Consolidation locomotives
acquired from Cooke. DSP&P also owned
eight 2-6-0 Moguls from
Cooke.

HISTORY
Twenty Cooke
2-8-0 Consolidations were delivered to the DSP&P between June and
November 1883. The first nine were numbered to fill the gap created
when the older
Baldwin 2-8-0's were numbered DSP&P 50 through 57 back in
1880. The other eleven Cooke 2-8-0's were then numbered DSP&P 58
through 68. They became a continuous group from #198 to 217 in the
1885 renumbering scheme and later C&S 37 to 56 in 1899. They had 36"
drivers and 15x18" cylinders. Most were scrapped or sold to lumber
companies across the first 20 years of the C&S era.
