For modeling purposes, many of these gauges are similar enough to be
considered the same gauge. For example, 80 cm track is "close enough" to 2ft
6in (30 in) to be considered the same gauge for modeling, especially in the
smaller scales. Therefore 80 cm gauge is not shown separately in subsequent
tables. Similarly 60 cm and 24 inch gauge are treated as equals for modeling
purposes.  42 inch gauge is also called Cape Gauge in South Africa.

These scales are not often used by modelers, but some full or half size mockups are
used to illustrate new products, or are set up in museums, advertisements, movies,
or parades. A model manufacturer recently built a full size model of one of its G
scale models, which itself was a model of a full size original. Thus, they created
a 22.5 to 1 scale ratio.

This size of model is expensive, weighs tons instead of pounds, and needs all
outdoors to run in. Wealthy aristocrats and buinessmen have done it, as well
as amusement parks.

Real people could afford this, but its more a passion than a hobby. Adults can
ride and a few live steam trains could pull as many as a hundred people.

Many industrial models are made at or near this scale to demonstrate or exhibit new
designs. The odd track gauges noted above are drawn from this kind of model. The
usual track gauge is 9-1/2 inches for live steam available today.

Many live steam models are 1/8 scale running on various gauges, near the 7.25
inch value. Some modelers use slightly odd scales so that the standard track
is a better match to the correct size. Several manufacturers supply parts,
kits, and built-up locomotives in this scale. The multitude of available track
gauges makes this scale popular for exotic railways, especially industrial
narrow gauge.

Some industrial and architectural models are made at 1/10th scale (1:10).

good use of the numbered gauges that were popular in the first half of the
20th century.

The "Numbered" Scales, Number 5 Scale through Number 0 Scale, come from the
toy train days of the first half of the 20th century, and are credited to
Marklin, a German manufacturer. Do not confuse with I thru VI Scales -
There is no connect between the two naming conventions. The "Proto" term suggests
fine scale modeling, as close to scale as possible, especially wheel contours.

Gauges over 5 inches were used on working display models of steam locomotives,
meant to demonstrate the most advanced technology of the early steam era at
trade fairs and industrial shows.
