This is a popular scale with
many ardent adherents. The equipment is big |
enough to see detail modeling,
yet small enough to allow for a decent sized |
railway in a basement or
garage. S Hi-Rail is epitomized by American Flyer
and |
Lionel train sets. The
original S Scale name, H1, meant half of Number 1
Scale |
(1:32) but was sometimes shown
as 1:60 scale. |
A scale of 1:65 is mentioned,
using HO track for 42" gauge in Japan. |

"Double-Oh" started out quite
confused because of the variations in track |
gauge and incompatibilities
between toy train suppliers. Hi-Rail standards use |
the same dimensions, but have
larger flanges. Such equipment will not run on |
"normal" OO Gauge track. The
use of HO gauge track in Britain allowed the use |
of easily obtained drive
mechanisms to fit the smaller British prototype |
without making the engine too
wide. The error in track gauge was less |
objectionable than the wide
locomotive. |
Military models are available
in 1:72 and 1:76 scales. |

Other scale ratios have been
published for EM Scale, including 1:76 (OO Scale |
using EM Gauge). The use, in
Japan, of HO gauge track with 1:80 scale has been |
mentioned for representing
their 42 inch gauge trains. Some train sets were
produced |
in Britain at 1:82 scale to
run on ewither OO or HO scale model railways. |

The name, HO Scale means half
of (British) O Scale, 7 mm = 1 foot, but the |
British never pursued HO like
modelers in the USA. More than 50 percent of |
all modelers in USA use this
scale. What else needs to be said! Early HO |
models were built to various
scales (1:72, 1:76, 1:82, 1:90) - some modern |
models are still not too close
to the correct scale of 1:87, others are |
exceptionally well detailed
and very precise scale models. It usually depends on |
price. I have seen a reference
to HOf gauge but don/t know any more. |
